Even though the calendar may say it’s not officially winter yet, the cold weather is here. And with that comes heavy coats, boots, snow–and usually a wet mess in your entryway and garage. With some easy storage solutions you can make sure all those winter essentials have a place so you can keep your home dry and clean.

1. Create a Bench and Boot Rack Combo

Build or purchase a bench for your entryway that has a bottom shelf. Use the bench to change into and out of gear. Cover the bottom shelf with a cloth mat to place wet boots and shoes.

2. Use an Over-the-Door Shoe Organizer

This is a great place to keep paired mittens together and scarves. It’s also a good place to store single mittens until the other ones turn up.

3. Store Sweaters Correctly

Sweaters lose their shape if you hang them. Keep sweaters folded in drawers and closets. Use sweater boxes or shelf dividers to keep piles of sweaters from toppling over.

4. Make More Space in Your Front Closet

Add a shelf near the bottom of your front closet. Use the shelf to hold bins. Designate a bin to each family member for easy access to winter accessories. The space beneath the shelf should still have enough room to store shoes.

5. Keep Skis Vertical

Don’t risk damaging skis by leaning them into a corner. If you have multiple sets they can get scratched or it can be hard to reach for the pair you want. Keeping them in a ski bag is also a bad idea since leftover moisture can rust your skis’ edges. Keep them vertical on a ski rack.
