5 Storage Hacks for Holiday Decorations

innovativestor • Nov 29, 2018

The most wonderful time of the year can easily be followed by the most cluttered time of the year if your collection of holiday decorations gets out of control. While you’re unpacking the tinsel and tree this year, keep the holly jolly spirit alive by employing a few storage tactics during the de-decorating process. Here are just a few hacks for storing your holiday decorations this year:

1. Repurpose food storage containers

One of the most cringeworthy moments of decorating is opening up a box of jumbled and tangled ornaments. Keep every bulb, bell and bauble neat and tidy by reusing food storage containers. Fruit bins with compartments, egg cartons and cardboard coffee carriers are all perfect for organizing ornaments of all shapes and sizes.

2. Clean out old decorations

While you are unpacking decorations this year, make a conscious effort to get rid of the old ones that are just going to end up in the bottom of the box instead of on the tree. If there are any that are broken, have no special meaning to you, or are just plain creepy (you know the ones), it might be time to pitch them and make room for other decorations.

3. Wrap lights around slabs of cardboard

If your Christmas lights are tangled enough to kill your holiday cheer, it might be time to find a new organization method. One inexpensive and simple way to keep them from tangling is to wrap them around long, sturdy slabs of cardboard. Don’t forget to tape down the ends so they don’t come unraveled!

4. Hang up larger items on a pop-up closet

Pop-up closets aren’t just for clothes! Collapsible clothes racks are great for storing larger decorations that don’t always fit in boxes. Wreaths, garland, etc. are all perfect candidates for storing vertically. Just tie pieces of thick ribbon around your decorations and hang them up as you would articles of clothing.

5. Always use airtight storage containers

Cardboard boxes can hit the recycling bin as far as we’re concerned! Airtight plastic tubs are always the better solution for storing holiday decorations. Not only are they sturdier and can be stacked more easily, but in the case of a flooded basement, your priceless mementos will be much better protected.
