Home Organization for Your New Year’s Resolution
Getting in shape, reading more books, donating to charities – all are great New Year’s resolutions. But our team at Innovative Home Storage has something a little more unconventional in mind – organization resolutions! This year, spend some time considering your home organization needs and creating a plan to stick to your goals. Here are just a few resolutions to put on your list:
1. Out with the old, in with the new
The beginning of the year is the perfect time to sift through the clutter to decide what stays and what gets the boot. If you have something that’s just taking up space (i.e. you haven’t used it in the past year and don’t think you’ll use it in the foreseeable future), don’t be afraid to let go. Trust us, you’ll feel more in control of your life once you declutter and have extra space.
2. Create a cleaning schedule
Between soccer practice, work functions and life’s twists and turns, when are you supposed to find time for the cleaning?? Make a pact with yourself in 2019 to stay on a strict cleaning schedule so you don’t get swamped in the mess. Designate one night a week to be cleaning time, or perhaps it’s more realistic to assign one cleaning task per day. If cleaning is the one thing you just dread, make it interesting by rewarding yourself with guilty pleasures after accomplishing some of the less pleasant tasks. A bowl of ice cream after vacuuming? Yes please!
3. Keep the floor for walking
No matter how your house is designed, a cluttered floor equals a cluttered home. If there are items that have found a home on your floor, consider employing a few organization hacks. For example, expand your shelf space by mounting magazine racks and painted crates to the wall, add hooks to the backs of doors to hang up more items, or even suspend larger items (like bicycles) from the ceiling.
4. Identify organization problem areas to zero in on
Is there a specific area of your home that proves to be a problem child over and over again? For example, if your bedroom seems to stay pretty clean but your kitchen is a constant disaster, perhaps it’s time for a whole new pantry organization system. 5. Impart your organization wisdom on the next generation
And finally – perhaps the most challenging resolution – take some time to teach your kiddos about good cleaning habits. How will they learn to pick up their toys if no one shows them how? Set a positive example by teaching them that every item has a place, and maybe even get them to pitch in on some dishwashing now and then!
